What Is Tree Stump Grinding?

Nov 17, 2021

Do you have an eyesore of a tree stump on your property? Tree stump grinding is an alternative to tree stump removals that can remove the stump and kill the roots underneath.

Here is more on what tree stump grinding is, what it involves, and the types of tree stump grinders available.

What is Tree Stump Grinding?

Tree stump grinding is a stump removal option that doesn’t remove every tree root. This means it causes less disruption to your landscape whilst still ensuring that the roots below are killed. For this reason, it’s considered a more manageable option for homeowners.

The process involves grinding the stump into small trunks until it’s completely gone. The stump is grounded below ground level – ensuring it impacts the roots underneath. This is an inexpensive procedure that relies on the use of a power tool.

How does stump grinding work?

A stump cutter is used in the tree stump grinding process. A stump cutter has rotating blades that chip away at the stump as they turn. The blade’s teeth break the wood down into small pieces that can be used as mulch to fill the hole left in place of the stump.

An operator must guide the blade over the stump, ensuring that they reduce it to well below ground level. Once the stump is completely ground out, we recommend using mulch or soil to compact it.

Types of stump grinders

There are several types of tree stump grinders available. A professional usually determines what grinder to use based on the size of the job and the location. Some options include:

Riding Grinders

These are small tractors that a professional removalist operates from a seat. These are efficient for small operations.

Hand-guided Grinders

These are the most portable solution and often look like a lawnmower.

Skid Stump Grinders

This grinder is used to lift large surface areas when the ground beneath is too soft for traditional tyres – as is the case with turf or soil. Skid stump grinders are driven by an operator riding atop or behind and initiate continuous tracks – almost like a tank – that allow it to withstand its ground in difficult terrain.

Rear-hitch Wheeled Stump Grinders

This grinder type can be ‘hitched’ or attached to a trailer or truck. Once near the stump, operators detach it and steer it into place. This grinder is suitable for when there are multiple stumps to ground out in the area and travel is required.
